Phillips Corrects F.P. Journe Delivery Date After Watchmaker Intervenes
The auction house amended its provenance assertions for an early Chronomètre à Résonance after François-Paul Journe clarified the watch was not the first commercial delivery.

Phillips has corrected the delivery timeline of an early F.P. Journe Chronomètre à Résonance scheduled for its November Geneva auction after the watchmaker publicly disputed the house's provenance assertions. The correction shifts the documented history of the watch, which the auction house had previously positioned as a potentially unprecedented commercial delivery for the reference.
According to Hodinkee, Phillips walked back its initial assertion that the pre-production timepiece was delivered to its original owner in 1999[1] after a signed letter from François-Paul Journe established the actual delivery occurred in June 2000,[1] which was several months later. This correction directly refutes the auction house's initial marketing suggestion that the watch represented the earliest commercial delivery of the reference.
The dispute highlights the friction between auction house marketing and the rigorous verification standards required by high-value collectors. Watchpro had previously reported that the timepiece, bearing a pre-production serial number, was billed as almost certainly the first Chronomètre à Résonance ever commercially delivered[2], carrying significant historical weight and a corresponding estimate. However, the manufacturer's intervention revealed that several other examples were delivered globally during the months preceding this watch's shipment, dismantling the earliest commercial designation that often commands a steep premium at this level of the market.
The incident demonstrates the risk of relying solely on auction house catalog descriptions without independent manufacture verification when managing high-value watch portfolios. While early production placement often drives premium pricing, the loss of the first delivered status alters the valuation framework for the upcoming sale. As Hodinkee noted, collectors place significant value on the earliest examples in a production run, meaning the corrected timeline could directly impact the final bidding depth and the ultimate hammer price[1].
The unresolved question remains how the market will price an early pre-production model that carries historical significance but lacks the definitive first commercial status. The available evidence does not disclose the serial numbers of the prior deliveries, which Journe declared confidential, leaving the exact hierarchy of early Résonance models partly unverified for external market participants.

Introducing Zenith Chronomaster Solo Sport Introducing TAG Heuer Monza Flyback Chronograph Carbon Limited Edition Phillips says it "stands corrected" after F.P. Journe posts a letter clarifying the delivery date of Chronmètre à Résonance. Auction house Phillips has walked back and corrected a claim that an early, pre-production Chronmètre à Résonance watch, set to come up for sale in November, was delivered in 1999 after the watchmaker F.P. Journe said it arrived the next year and wasn't the first example of the reference sent to a customer. "We stand corrected thanks to François-Paul Journe," Phillips said in an Instagram post . "The "Pre-Production" Chronomètre à Résonance 022/99 to be offered by Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo on November 7-8 was not delivered in 1999 as we originally believed. Thanks to F.P.Journe we now know the watch was actually delivered on 8 June, 2000," the auction house added. The Phillips correction followed the publication of a letter signed by F.P. Journe that disputed Phillips' claim that the watch with serial number 022/99 was likely one of the first Résonance watches commercially sold and delivered. In announcing the sale of the watch, which will hit the auction block in November in Geneva, Phillips had said t he consignor and original owner of the watch had taken delivery of the piece in 1999. Phillips has announced it will offer what is almost certainly the first Chronomètre à Résonance ever commercially delivered at The Geneva Watch Auction: XXIV on 7–8 November 2026. Fresh to market from its original owner after 27 years, serial number 022/99R arrives with real significance in horological history – and a CHF 500,000–1,000,000 price tag to match. The first 20 Chronomètre à Résonance watches were reserved for original Tourbillon Souverain Souscription supporters, and Journe kept number 021 as his personal presentation piece. That makes 022 the earliest number available for commercial sale, chosen deliberately by the original owner because it matched his birth date. He acquired it
